Cuddalore Thermal Power Project
The project is supplying power to India's power-starved Southern Region through the IL&FS Tamil Nadu Power Company Ltd (ITPCL), which houses the 3,840 MW imported coal-based thermal power plant in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. Of the cumulative project capacity, Phase I of 1,200 MW has commenced commercial operation; the second phase will have 3 x 660 MW and the final phase will have 1 x 660MW with necessary approvals.
Innovations and Impact
- The power plant uses environment-friendly technology and imported coal from its captive coal mine in Indonesia, which has low ash content.
- The project has a captive desalination plant and uses sea water to meet its water requirements, thus reducing the pressure on inland freshwater resources of the state.
- It is one of the few plants in the country with Flue Gas De-sulphurisation (FGD) to capture sulphur from the gases and reduce sulphur emission.
- The project provided direct employment to over 5000 persons during the construction phase and provides employment to over 1000 persons during operations.
